Places
Evergreen House
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
Originally built for the James family in 1867, Evergreen house later became the home of Canada’s “First Lady of Folklore” Dr. Helen Creighton. Crieghton collected and documented over 4,000 traditional songs, stories, and beliefs from Nova Scotian folklore.
Our Lady of Mercy Heritage Church
Port au Port West-Aguathuna-Felix Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador
The largest and one of the oldest wooden structures in Newfoundland and Labrador, Our Lady of Mercy was constructed by local craftsmen who used traditional woodworking techniques. The ceiling of the church was built using the same techniques to build the hull of a schooner, and the church is decorated with marble stations of the cross carved by sculptor Gerald Squires.
Morrin Centre
Québec, Québec
Built 200 years ago as the city’s first prison, the Morrin Centre is now an English cultural centre that is home to a library of over 28,000 books – some of which date back to the 16th century. Since 1824, it has been home to the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
Leacock Museum National Historic Site
Orillia, Ontario
The summer home of Canadian humourist and author Stepehen Butler Leacock provided inspiration for the setting of his novel Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, with the fictional Mariposa being based on Orillia and its inhabitants. Today, the museum is home to the world’s largest archival holding of Leacock manuscripts, covering the period of 1869 to 1944 and focusing on Orillia, Lake Simcoe, and Montreal.
Métis Crossing
Smoky Lake, Alberta
Métis Crossing invites you to immerse yourself in Métis history, culture and tradition. Through programming that involves art, dance, music, and the natural environment, as well as exhibits and historic buildings, visitors will learn all about the Métis.
Kings Landing
Prince William, New Brunswick
A 19th-century living history museum, Kings Landing offer workshops and summer camps that celebrate traditional craftmanship techniques. The site includes a blacksmith, theatre, and print shop.
Beaconsfield Historic House
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Built in 1877, Beaconsfield was considered one of Charlottetown’s most elegant homes, with the finest in materials and craftsmanship and stunning architectural features.
Sharon Museum and Gardens
East Gwillimbury, Ontario
Completed in 1832, Sharon Temple was a central meeting place for the Children of Peace, an Upper Canadian Quaker Sect who emphasized equality, symbolism of architecture and cultivated vocal and instrumental music. They created the first civilian band and commissioned the first organ in Ontario. The unique architecture of the temple makes acoustics and music sound as though they are coming from all corners of the building.
Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery
Nelson, British Columbia
This gallery, housed in a historic building in downtown Nelson, celebrates the history, creativity, and culture of Nelson. The Nelson Museum is one of only two organizations in Canada to house a permanent installation of Jaime Black’s The REDress Project.
