Strolling Through History: A Summer Walk in the Forest of the Papineau Estate

Is there anything better than venturing into an old forest on a hot July day? Sure, strolling along the path with an ice cream in hand.

The forest around the Manoir-Papineau is filled with truly ancient giants. I felt like the trees were standing guard protecting the region and inviting me in to discover the stories of the area. There is a network of connected trails through the forest that is newly updated and a true wonder, offering a deep quiet and meditative ambiance as well as a meaningful cultural experience about the history of Québec during the 1800s.

There are many historic sites along this 13km trail. From the 90-year-old train station built of red cedar logs, now an Economuseum, to the manor house of Louis-Joseph Papineau, the seigneur of this Petite-Nation region of Québec www.petitenationoutaouais.com.

The 200–300-year-old red oak was the real treasure of my visit. During his estate’s planning, Papineau consciously preserved the tree which was already a hundred years old. Papineau organized round dances around this tree, to the delight of his grandchildren. I was lucky enough to get a seedling of the great tree to take home and nurture, and pass on to a next generation, as this baby tree has a long life to live yet.
