Isle Madame – The Explorer’s Island #CanadianVisitList
Isle Madame is a hidden gem along the southeast coast of Cape Breton Island. It is a bastion of Acadian and Channel Island heritage, where the local French dialect has been influenced by both francophone cultures. Its history is tied to the fishery, and to the Fortress of Louisbourg and Fort Toulouse.
At the time of the earliest European arrivals, Isle Madame had been used and occupied by the Mi’kmaw since time immemorial. As settlement grew, so too did the importance of the island in being a gateway to the rest of Atlantic Canada. Today, Isle Madame is home to many diverse people including the descendents of Mi’kmaw, Acadians, Channel Islanders, Irish/Scottish, Germans, African and others who shaped Isle Madame’s culture.
Visit the island to explore its many coves, beaches, and trail systems. There are ship wrecks, a forge, lighthouses, several restaurants, hotels, AirBNBs, a growing arts scene and a long established culture that involves music of all kinds, just to name a few things to do!
