A History of Halifax’s Naval Bases
The Halifax Citadel was one of the first places I visited before moving to Nova Scotia, and it serves as a main anchor site for visitors to learn more about a time gone by — one of military and naval defence to protect Halifax and its Harbour.
Fort McNab came a little later, acting as battery defence during the British Empire. It’s a really fun visit for adults and kids alike. And plenty of photo opportunities and neat perspectives to be found.
Visiting George’s Island is on my wish list. Situated at the heart of the Harbour, it helped to protect one of the key naval stations of the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries. The island boasts a complex of subterranean passages and tunnels which I’m keen to explore!
