The Lunenburg Academy National Historic site is a massive three-story Victorian structure that sits atop Gallows Hill in Lunenburg, NS. Known as “the Castle on the Hill”, it is one of very few remaining, intact 19th-century Academy Buildings in Canada. Visit the Heritage Classroom, opened in 2022, from June – September. The classroom explores the history of the Academy, and its connection to the people of Lunenburg during a transformative era of educational reform. Built in 1895, the Academy is an impressive example of an eclectic, second empire style, including: original wainscoting, hand carved stairways, banisters, ornate and original hardware, a bold red, black, and white facade and many other character defining elements.
