The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches emerged in 1968, responding to a growing need in the 2SLGBTQ+ community for a supportive, affirming religious community. The Edmonton branch of this Protestant Christian denomination began in 1977, moving to the basement of McDougall United Church in 1990.
Before closing down in 2001 due to declining attendance, MCC Edmonton provided a much needed space for community education, critical support during the HIV/AIDS crisis, and a vital perspective on issues of spirituality and sexuality.

The Metropolitan Community Church was founded in 1968, one year before Stonewall, with gay and lesbian spirituality at its center. The Edmonton chapter of MCC also carried forward this mandate, leading workshops, collaborating with other religious organizations such as the United Church, and supporting the formation of organizations such as the AIDS Network of Edmonton.
MCC’s Edmonton chapter ended in 2001 due to declining attendance; former members then began attending services at affirming United Churches.
MCC was not the only affirming religious organization available to the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Edmonton. Dignity Canada Dignitée served a similar function for Edmonton’s Catholic community. Over the years, Dignity amassed what they called “the largest and best Gay Issue Library in the City” at member Roger’s house, with members encouraged to call him to schedule a visit to peruse and borrow books.
