All ages will enjoy sharing a story at the Barney’s River Station School Museum and shopping for quality foods & local arts & crafts at our outdoor Farmers’ Market of NS!

In celebration of Historic Places Days on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Old School Markets presents musical guest Petra Moriarty, and invites all lovers and creators of heritage arts, local foods, and knowledge to present their wares and practical skills in support of the School restoration funds. Donations and vendor fees today will go towards upkeep and necessary Museum repairs, including chimney, paint, and windows.

Visit the weekly FMNS showcasing local farm produce, baked goods,  arts & crafts, music, and more at the Old School Markets every Friday, 4 – 7 pm, in July through September.

The pre-Confederation Schoolhouse is a recognized Pictou County Heritage Property located just one minute down #4 East at Trans Canada Hwy. Exit 29 – halfway between the towns of Antigonish and New Glasgow, and only minutes up Barney’s River from the Shore Rd and local campgrounds, beaches,  and parks. A unique and charming one-room school complete with vintage desks, books, and historical information.

The School is now located at #98 Old Orchard Rd, a quiet cul-de-sac side street that was the main road across Canada. The recent Trans Canada Highway twinning project abruptly bypassed and created a quiet place to step aside into an almost forgotten period of Nova Scotia’s settlement, and to experience the structured education and rural lifestyles of that time.

The paved Old Orchard Rd. is a lovely place to take a comfortable stroll from the Museum to impressive views of the new Middle Brook bridge, about a 1.3 km return hike from the Museum. Nearby Weavers Mountain Road leads to an extensive network of dirt roads that are perfect for mountain biking, adventurous orienteering, and finding beautiful vistas to discover in eastern Pictou County.

The Museum is open daily in July and August from noon – 5 pm (Closed Mondays), and is only open through September during Friday Market hours 4 to 7 pm.

Check our Facebook page for up-to-date vendor and musical guest information. New vendors are welcome… Apply or visit us today!

Fun Facts

A retired teacher at this school became the museum curator until age 93. Her daughter, a student here along with her siblings,  continues to work in the preservation of this historical building and can share firsthand knowledge of one-room school attendance as a child in rural Nova Scotia.

The museum contains original desks, books, generational history, and memorabilia, and accounts for the life of Bard MacLean, a noted settler poet who lived in the nearby mountains, and is an ancestral line of the curator. https://museum.novascotia.ca/resources/gaels/immigrant-stories
