The Pictou County registered Heritage Property circa 1860’s is located just one minute off of the Trans Canada Hwy. on the #4 East at Exit 29 – halfway between the towns of New Glasgow and Antigonish and only minutes from local campgrounds and beaches. A unique and charming pre-Confederation one-room school complete with vintage desks, books, and community information.
The School has been newly located on a quiet side-road that once was the original highway across the province. The new Trans Canada highway twinning project has bypassed creating a precious place to take a step back in remembrance of an almost forgotten period of Nova Scotia’s settlement to experience early rural education and lifestyles of the time.
The Old Orchard Rd. is a lovely place to take a peaceful 1.3 km paved stroll from the Museum and back again to view the impressive new highway bridge infrastructure over the bubbling MiddleBrook, and also leads to an extensive dirt road system up over Weavers Mountain that is perfect for mountain bike and orienteering hiking adventures. Come on out to Barney’s River Station to shop, walk, and talk all things local!
Showcasing local musical talents on Market Fridays, the Museum is open seasonally in July and August / Tues – Sun / noon – 5 pm and is open in September during Friday Market hours until 7 pm. (closed Mondays)
