At the point where two rivers converge lies Wilson’s Point Historic Site, tucked out of sight, but full of history and beautiful surroundings. You’ll find it in Derby Junction, at the end of the Enclosure Rd, marked by the replica of the St James Church which houses an interpretive centre.
Knowledgeable staff will greet you with a smile and regale you with stories of the tumultuous history and happenings of Wilson’s Point beginning nearly three centuries ago.
Wilson’s Point has great significance to the history of Miramichi. Many of the earliest English speaking settlers lived and were buried here.
This provincially protected site has been summer hunting and fishing grounds for the M’ikmaq, a refuge for expelled Acadians called Camp d’esperance, the site of a bustling settlement of Scots and the midway point of a horse powered ferry system from Nelson to Newcastle.
The Scottish Heritage Association have restored the original grave sites and walking trails, installed a wharf, trading post and built an interpretive center. Enjoy a walk along our restored scenic trails with views of the Mighty Miramichi River. Pack a picnic and eat under the pines like our settlers once did 250 years ago.
Drop in to the replica of the original church that once stood on the grounds from 1791-1832. Cast a line in our shiny waters to catch a striped bass or salmon or trace your roots as you meander through our historic graveyard.
The Interpretive Centre is located in the beautiful little church which is naturally air conditioned and the perfect spot to enjoy ceilidhs, crafts, storytellers, teas and more. It also houses many delightful local and Canadian goods and artisan items in its gift shop. A fabulous little gem under the pines to come relax or play for the day.
The Interpretive Centre is is open daily 930-430 June-October
