Alfred Leslie Perry (1896-1982) Graduated from the McGill School of Architecture, 1923.

Morley C. Luke (1901-1967) – Luke apprenticed with architects Frank Peden in 1920, John S. Archibald in 1921, Nobbs and Hyde in 1922, and John T. Windrim from 1923-1924.

Perry became a sole practitioner in the early 1940s.

 

• History

Westmount Park United Church is an historic church building in Westmount, Quebec, located adjacent to Westmount Park.

Membership is derived from four different historic Protestant congregations. The first tabernacle on the site was a Methodist wooden structure built in 1885 and replaced with brick in 1896.

• The Church is noted for their commitment to the Environment.

Evolution

• 1885 • The Methodists built a small, clap-board tabernacle chapel at the corner of what is now de Maisonneuve Blvd. and Lansdowne.

• 1896 • replaced by a red brick Westmount Methodist Church.

• 1925 •  After Church Union in 1925, when Methodists, Congregationalist, and most Presbyterians amalgamated.

• 1929 • Westmount Park United Church was opened in 1929 to accommodate the enlarged congregation.

•  This place of worship houses a vast collection of C. W. Kelsey stained-glass windows.

• Historical Value

The historical heritage value resides in Westmount Park United Church, it’s roots with the United Church of Canada.

It was the first church in Westmount built for the United Church after its founding in 1925.

Subsequent mergers with other congregations brought artefacts and stained glass windows which bear witness to its rich history.

• Contextual Value

The contextual heritage value resides in Westmount Park United Church setting immediately adjacent to Westmount Park and it’s picturesque composition as related to the Park.  Its overall soaring bell tower make it an imposing landmark in the area.
