Town of Mount Royal, Quebec – Designated National Historic Site of Canada, 2008

Town of Mount Royal is a suburban town located on the Island of Montreal. In 2008, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The town celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012. ‘Centennial Square’ designated Historic Sites and Monuments Act (RSC., 1985, c H-4 ).

Town of Mount Royal was founded in 1912, as an initiative of the Canadian Northern Railway. The model town reflecting the Garden City Movement was designed by Frederick Todd – Planner, Thomas Darling- Architect and CN Chief Engineer Henry Wicksteed.

The significance of town lies in the construction of five kilometer tunnel, 1910-1918 connecting the city with Central Station in Montreal and passes northward to the City of Laval, connecting Montreal to Toronto. The tunnel is the third longest in Canada.

Henry K. Wicksteed (1850-1927), Chief Engineer of Surveys for CNR worked on the plannifcation of the Mount Royal Electrified Tunnel, incorporated in 1911.

Town of Mount Royal is noted for its Christmas Craft Fair, featuring local artisans and craftsmanship.
