In 1796 Nancy and several other enslaved Blacks fled their enslaver Caleb Jones of Nashwaaksis. Though they were caught shortly thereafter, Nancy went on to challenge her enslavement in the Superior Court defended by notable lawyers Ward Chipman and Samuel Denny Street. Though she lost her case, the impact of the trial changed public perception over the issue of slavery in New Brunswick. Lidge would again flee Caleb Jones by Canoe in 1816.
