Founded in 1873 by businessman George Stephen, Les Fourches, now called the Site patrimonial de pêche Matamajaw, allows him to welcome prestigious guests and practice salmon sport fishing. By 1908, the Matamajaw Salmon Club became one of the province’s most famous private salmon fishing camps. Bordering the Matapédia and Causapscal rivers, the luxurious establishment welcomed members and guests of the club until it was bought by the Quebec government in the 1970s. The Site patrimonial de pêche Matamajaw became, in 1984, a heritage property classified by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec and is today an accredited museum institution.
