The Saugeen River Rear Range Lighthouse is located on the north side of the Saugeen River in Southampton, ON, it and the nearly identical Saugeen Front Range Lighthouse located 750 meters west were constructed in 1903. It is a square wooden structure with tapered walls, (pepper pot design) with a metal railed gallery, the traditional white and red colour scheme and a wooden lantern. The pair of range lights has remained in service for over a century to help guide maritime traffic into the Southampton harbour. The Saugeen Rear Range Lighthouse along with , Saugeen River Front Range, McNab Point Lighthouse and the magnificent Imperial Tower at the Chantry Island Lightstation all helped to establish the area’s maritime character. The Saugeen River is the oldest Port on the Bruce Coast, with its history rooted in maritime trade and commercial fishing. We are now a tourist destination that thrives on our Marine Heritage.
