Step back in time and explore the historic 1903 Saugeen River Front Range Light, a working navigational beacon and a living symbol of Southampton’s Marine Heritage.

For over a century this beacon has helped guide commercial vessels, fishers, and boaters safely into the Southampton Harbour, in perfect alignment with the Saugeen River rear Range Light.

Perched on the north pier where the Saugeen River meets Lake Huron, the Saugeen Front Range Light has bravely withstood over one hundred years of lake storms.  Thanks to the community’s dedication, this ICON was restored back to its glory, after severe weather damage in 2019/20, ensuring it will endure waves, wind, and ice long into the future.

Today, this red and white guardian of Lake Huron is back open for “HISTORIC PLACES DAYS”. you can step inside the charming ‘pepper pot’ wooden structure, discover its unique tapered walls, metal rail gallery, and lantern area, and learn about the working foghorn and light system that has kept sailors safe for generations.

Join us to experience this piece of maritime history. You will learn about other historic jewels in and around Southampton- including our historic boat tours to the magnificent Imperial Tower on Chantry Island. Please visit chantryisland.com for more information.

Fun Facts

The foghorn blast has scared many a fisherman when fishing from the pier.

In 1989 a group of school children stopped a construction company from stripping the shingles from the Saugeen River Range Light’s and replacing the shingles with aluminum siding.

Volunteers painted the shingles by hand to replace them on the Saugeen River Front Range in 2022 and they already have new shingles prepared for the Saugeen River Rear Range, work to be completed in Fall of 2024.

Storm Signal Baskets were replaced by the Range Lights.  Check out the Storm Signal Station located in Pioneer Park.  Built by the Propellor Club members in 1983. Volunteers even repaired the huge baskets and then created a second set of  after being taught how to weave.  This project kept some volunteers busy during 2020/21.
