This watering hole has existed in one form or other for 150 years. The wooden tub has long since been replaced with a cement basin. The Gosman family appear in census records of the area in the early 1800’s and are likely relatives of “John Gosmon” who appears in the Birchtown Muster of free Blacks dated 1784. The property containing the tub was originally granted to Namiah Marks, a White Maryland Loyalist, but it appears he never settled there. It is unclear if John Gosmon and Marks had a relationship that resulted in the Gosmon family migrating to the area and settling on the Marks grant. Salome’s well has been a local landmark and source of drinking water for generations.
