On June 25th, 1943 two bombers out of Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick were on training run near Summerville when one of the planes, a Ventura, developed engine trouble. The disabled craft turned towards Stanley, but immediately lost altitude and crashed near the Musgrove Road. All four airmen aboard perished. There were two from New Zealand, both buried in Maplewood Cemetery, one from Australia, buried in St. John’s The Evangelist Catholic Cemetery, Windsor and the fourth a Canadian from Bracebridge, Ontario where he is interred. The crash occurred on the last day of school and was witnessed by many students on their way home as well as their teacher, local historian, Edith Mosher.
