In the heart of downtown Halifax, this strategic hilltop fort offers a commanding view of Halifax Harbour. Step back to 1749 and immerse yourself in the social and military history of Halifax with the 78th Highlanders and the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery. Learn about the changing roles of the fort and visit the Army Museum.

  • Halifax was the principal naval station of the British Empire and played an important role in Canadian History.
  • The Halifax Citadel was the headquarters for the defense complex that protected Halifax and its naval base from various world wide threats.
  • The year-round, daily noon ceremonial firing of the Halifax Citadel’s 12-pounder gun is one of the most enduring and recognized symbols in Halifax’s history. It is considered one of the oldest continuing noon guns in the world.
