You can see this area has been heavily gentrified, but back in the 1950’s and 1960’s this area was a classic urban cityscape with a large Black population living here. In the mid-1960’s 2088 Gottingen Street housed the Kwacha House (in 2024 The Field Guide is located on the site). This establishment provided a space for Black intellectual and political thought. The exchange of ideas common here is captured in the short film Encounter at Kwacha House from 1967 where activist and lawyer Rocky Jones lead discussions concerning racism and inequality in the local community at this time.
