The congregation, “Emanu-El of Victoria, Vancouver Island,” came into being in 1862. The cornerstone of this neo-Romanesque synagogue, designed by architect John Wright, was laid 2 June 1863 in a city-encompassing celebration. Congregation Emanu-El has continued to thrive in Victoria and is now a growing Conservative Jewish community of about 250 families. This cherished building has undergone two significant restorations and, together with the community’s even older Jewish Cemetery, remains at the heart of this progressive and egalitarian Jewish Community.
