The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is one of Canada’s most significant historic and architectural landmarks, overlooking the harbour and skyline of St. John’s, NL, since the 19th century. Constructed between 1839 and 1855 under the leadership of Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming, the Basilica is renowned for its striking Romanesque Revival architecture, extraordinary craftsmanship, and remarkable collection of sacred art and stained glass.
Today, the Cathedral Basilica remains both an active place of worship and a vibrant cultural and community space, welcoming visitors from around the world. The broader Basilica Block campus is stewarded by the Cathedral Basilica Foundation, a secular nonprofit organization dedicated to heritage preservation, community engagement, education, and cultural activation. Through concerts, exhibitions, heritage interpretation, and public programming, the Foundation works to connect the site’s rich history with contemporary community life in meaningful ways.
During HistoricPlacesDays, visitors are invited to explore this nationally significant site, discover its rich stories, and experience one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most treasured historic places.
