The Black Rock is situated on Bridge Street, near rue des Irlandais, in Montreal. It was installed in 1859 to remember the 6000+ Irish immigrants that died and were buried in the area in 1847 from typhus; and as a result of the Great Hunger in Ireland. It also honors the many Montrealers of every language, religion and heritage that lived in Montreal at the time and went to provide help and comfort to these dying Irish – many  of these caregivers also gave their lives in one of the greatest humanitarian efforts  in the history of Montreal, Quebec and Canada.
