In the early 1970s the building that housed the 519 Community Centre was condemned, but community members rallied to save it. For more than 50 years, The 519 has been a place where people have gathered to build community, advocate for equality, and make their voices heard. Located in the heart of Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village, the community centre has played a central role in the history of Canada’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities, providing a welcoming space where people could connect, organize, and support one another.
Today, The 519 continues to foster communication across generations and cultures through its programs, public events, and welcoming community spaces. Whether supporting newcomers, preserving community connections, or creating opportunities for dialogue and celebration, the centre reminds us that communication is not only about words—it is about creating spaces where every voice can be heard, valued, and empowered.
