📖 Storytelling at Cape Race – July 10, 2025

Stories Carried by the Wind, Told by Those Who Know the Coast

Come hear the stories shaped by salt, wind, and time — right where the past still lingers in the air

Join us for an unforgettable evening of storytelling at the Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre, Cape Race, where myth, mystery, and maritime history come alive in the voice of Riley Pennell, local historian and author of “A Crossing Inexplicable”.

🔹 The Wreckers of Trepassey, 1857

A Spanish shipwreck loaded with gold, an unscrupulous sheriff, and a poverty-stricken port populated by the desperate. What could possibly go wrong?

🔹 The Long Beach Mickeleens, 1953

Local tales of “fairy-folk”: legendary beings said to dwell in nearby rivers. Riley weaves together whispers of folklore and eerie coincidences that leave behind more questions than answers.

🔹The Man Who Cried Wreck, 1891

In the backdrop of an era known for unreliable communications, Riley recounts the disquieting tale of a certain James Brennan. Who was he? A wandering madman, or a lone survivor?

🔹 John Dart, the Trepassey Turncoat, 1779

War presents men with many things; it brings both sorrow and opportunity. The second of these is what grabbed the attention of a local man many centuries ago, and brought about a fateful decision.

These tales, drawn from the rugged shores of Trepassey Bay, are a powerful mix of fact, folklore, and forgotten history — told where the past still lingers in the air.
