To learn more about Kirkland Lake’s unique mining history, be sure to take a free self-guided tour of the Toburn Gold Mine Site!
The Toburn was the first producing gold mine in Kirkland Lake, founded by Harry Oakes and the Tough Brothers in 1912. The self-guided tour brochures below describe the contents of the buildings on site as well as the history and geology of the mine.
The tour is completely above ground, with several outdoor displays that include mining equipment, large specimens of rock found in our region, and a video describing the industrial heritage of the mine and the Kirkland Lake area.
Be sure to stop by and see why we “Dig KL” at the Toburn!
