The Engagement at the Forty took place June 8, 1813, as part of the defence of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. The Forty – now Grimsby – was the location the American forces retreated to after the Battle of Stoney Creek. The British Navy, lead by Admiral Yeo, attacked from Lake Ontario. Indigenous forces fired down on the Americans from the escarpment. The militias made their way from Stoney Creek. The Americans were taken by surprise and fled back to Fort George leaving anything they could not carry. The Americans did not come back through this way again.
