Tyng Hill, also known as the Steele Property, has been in the Marshall family for generations. There are many stories of indigenous peoples coming to the property off of Portage Cove to cut Black Ash for basket making. A notable man by the name of Captain Dick Steele was a decorated WWII veteran who has memories of the indigenous peoples on the property. Dick Steele was also a horticulturist who hybridized many rhododendrons and azaleas on Tyng Hill to make them more resilient against the maritime winters. To this day, the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom in June.
