Lynde House is the oldest home in Durham Region and a stunning example of Georgian-era architecture.

Visitors will learn about the Lynde family’s early life as Settlers in this country, the Indigenous peoples who lived here before them, the role of Lynde House in the War of 1812 (including General Brock’s visit), the development of Whitby into an important port and stopping place, the significance of the Warren General Store & Post Office, and the forward-thinking beliefs of Lyndes towards abolition and equality of women.

Exiting the house, guests will continue to the Drive Shed display to view the O’Donovan Cutter Sleigh, and then to Clarissa Lynde’s Heritage Kitchen Garden to learn about the plants grown for food, medicine and other purposes. No trip would be complete without a visit to the modern-day Warren General Store Fundraiser Gift Shop next door, where the work of many local artists, artisans and authors are available.

Lynde House hosts many events, festivals, re-enactments, performances, tea parties, and educational programs through the year. There’s always something fun happening at Lynde House Museum!
