Built in 1896, the original building structure housed the Tin Shop as well as the family home of Watson and Jeanetta Smith . In 1902, an addition was added, in 1922 the final addition was added, and to this day remains the fully intact Tin Shop.

Cullen Smith, the oldest son of Watson and Jeanetta, was passionate about the Hardware Store.
Harry Smith, the youngest of the Smith children, spent five years overseas in the Air Force as a mechanic. The Tiger Moth was his favorite, always taking them up for a test flight before allowing any of the air men to fly them.
It was with the encouragement of Dr. Ross MacInnis that Harry sold the building to the Municipality, on the condition that it would always be kept as a Museum.
Harry was born and lived at the Tin Shop home, until his death in 2002. In 2003, the Shubenacadie Tinsmith Museum & Gift Shop opened to the public.
