Built c. 1770-1772 by Joseph Scott, an Irish settler who arrived in Halifax in 1749, Scott Manor House is the oldest house in Bedford. This gambrel-roofed colonial building has its original kitchen fireplace and bake oven, wishbone chimneys, intact hand-hewn beams and in the attic, the original floor boards with square nails. Open seasonally, Scott Manor House is located in the heart of Bedford, adjacent to the site where the outpost Fort Sackville was constructed in 1749 to protect Halifax. Visitors can tour the Manor House, enjoy our summer program of displays, exhibits, and other events, explore local history resources, and relax on the grounds or in the tea room.
