The Salvage Fisherman’s Museum is Newfoundland’s second oldest community museum, established in 1969 and run primarily by members of the local Heffern family for four decades. Throughout the years the museum has played an important role in the community as a space through which to preserve and share traditional crafts, skills, and stories.
This year the historic portion of the building is getting a much needed face-lift in order to restore and stabilize the 160+ year old registered heritage building. As a result of these ongoing restorations the museum is taking the opportunity to re-imagine and re-design its exhibits in a way which will honour its past caretakers and provide visitors with new, interactive experiences.
Interested visitors should be aware that the museum isn’t able to hold regular hours because of the restorations, but that, it may be able to accommodate interested visitors by appointment.
While you are in Salvage, we encourage you to take advantage of the Damnable Trail which passes through the museum property and leads you to two historic cemeteries.
