Designated a national historic site of Canada in 1966, the Court House was designed by the noted Toronto architect John Howard and constructed in 1842-44 by Benjamin Chaffey, a local contractor. The original courthouse was built in 1808 and in 1824 it was replaced with a bigger building. The last courthouse was, and the one you see today was built in 1843. It’s a typical Neo-classical style. The building easily incorporates the diverse facilities of courtroom, offices, and jail. The west wing was added in 1888, while the Gaoler’s House on the east side was built in 1898.
