The Old Provincial Normal College was constructed in 1877 and is currently municipally and provincially designated as a registered heritage property. Designed by Halifax architect Henry Frederick Busch, the Old Provincial Normal College is a large, Second Empire Style brick building. The building is valued not only as an architectural landmark in the centre of the Town’s Civic Square, but for its association with the development of Nova Scotia’s public education system in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For eighty-three years, the Normal College served as a training centre for Nova Scotian teachers. This historically significant site has recently been successfully repurposed as the new Public Library that overlooks a vibrant community green space (skating oval in the winter) amidst the Town’s Farmer’s Market, Museum, Police Station and Fire Station.
