The Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall (VJLS-JH) would like to invite people who are interested in Japanese-Canadians’ history to participate in our Powell Street Walking Tours!
These tours, which VJLS-JH has been offering for many years, are typically open to the public during the summer months!
**
The Powell Street Walking Tour focuses on the pre-WWII history of 8,000 Japanese-Canadians who lived in Vancouver. We will take you on a journey through time to locations along and around historic Powell Street, an area that was home to 8,000 Japanese Canadians and over 400 Japanese-owned businesses prior to the Dispossession and Internment of Japanese Canadians in 1942.
Our walking tour matches the stories of the past with the architecture and clues that remain today. You’ll see the school and neighbourhood in a completely different way!
There will be a 20-minute presentation at the school followed by about an hour of walking, finishing with a short conversation back at the school.

Tours are usually conducted in English, but tours in Japanese are also available, please feel free to contact Misaki Kawai: communityprogramming@vjls-jh.com if you have any questions.
We look forward to walking with you and exploring the history of our neighborhood together!
