Celebrating North Cowichan’s 150th Anniversary through Artists, Past and Present

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Municipality of North Cowichan on June 18, 1873, the Cowichan Valley Museum in the former Duncan Train Station on Canada Avenue in Duncan, BC is showcasing its own, and some loaned, artwork of local artists, past and present.  This temporary exhibit will open to the public at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Featured artists in this month-long exhibition include such artists as James Christison, Ethel Annie Leather, John Spears and Louis Charles Springett.  The exhibition at the Museum features 24 artists in total.

In addition to this exhibition, the Cowichan Historical Society has ordered two special cakes which will be cut and served to members of the public at noon on June 18th at the northeast corner of the former Duncan Train Station.

The first cake will be an anniversary cake in honour of the 150th birthday of the Municipality of North Cowichan.

The second cake will be to thank the community for supporting the Society in its win in the National Trust for Canada Next Great Save competition to preserve the former train station building which was built in 1912.

June 18 is also Father’s Day.  The Society has also arranged a Classic Car Display in the parking lot beside the Museum from 12 noon to 3 pm.

The Cowichan Historical Society owns and operates the Cowichan Valley Museum & Archives.  The Museum is currently open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 am to 4 pm.  It will change to its summer hours of seven days a week, 10 am to 4 pm beginning June 15th.  Do check out the Museum’s new website at https://cvmuseum.ca/ for more visitor information.
