Elmira Railway Museum & Miniature Railway
One of seven Museum and Heritage sites, Elmira Station served as the eastern terminus of Prince Edward Island’s railway. Learn the story of railroading on the Island through photographs, maps, artifacts, and original station master’s office. Home to the PEI Miniature Railway and one of Atlantic Canada’s largest model train collections. Come see the Speeder and trolley. Train rides, gift shop, bike rentals. Group rates. Admission charged.
Hours of Operation: June and September open Monday to Friday and daily in July and August – 9:30am – 5:00pm.
Take a 15 minute ride on the PEI Miniature Railway and enjoy the beauties of nature as well as a covered bridge, a 100 foot long above ground tunnel, and hand painted murals and replicas of native animals. Operates July and August ONLY with the last train for the day leaving the station at 4:30pm.
Ride the “wye” in a 1986 Fairmount speeder along the original track that was used since the mid-1930’s to turn the train at the Elmira Station.
The Model Train Collection, one of Atlantic Canada’s largest, displays over 200 HO scale models, and a large PEI map layout representing railroading on PEI in its early days. Enjoy our reading nook where the visitor can quietly browse through the large resource library with over 1900 railway related titles.
Elmira’s new permanent exhibit showcases many items from the retired CN ferry, the Abegweit. For many decades, the trains helped connect passengers to the CN ferries which took people and goods from PEI to the mainland and return. A documentary video shows a CN locomotive loading on the ferry leaving PEI for the last time in December 1989.
On display is CN Caboose #78431, built from a railway box car in 1943, is presently undergoing restoration. Visitors can explore the interior which is also used for children’s programming.
Our Gift Shop stocks railroad souvenirs and a wide variety of local crafts made by Island Artisans. Elmira now marks the “end of the Line” for the Confederation trail. Bike rentals are available.
