All ages will enjoy the nostalgia created by a tour of the Barney’s River Station School Museum and shopping for quality foods & local products at our outdoor farmer’s market!

In celebration of Historic Places Days on Friday July 12, 2024 Old School Markets are inviting creators of heritage arts, local foods, and  knowledge to present their wares and share practical skills in support of School restoration funds. Donations and all occasional vendor fees on this day will go towards necessary Museum repairs including chimney, paint, and windows.

Shop for local farm eggs, cheese, preserves, produce, baked goods, handmade body care, arts & crafts, and more at the Old School Markets every Friday 4 – 7 pm in July to October

A Pictou County recognized Heritage Property circa 1860’s located just one minute down the #4 East at Trans Canada Hwy. Exit 29 – halfway between the towns of Antigonish and New Glasgow, and only minutes from local campgrounds, beaches,  and parks. A unique and charming pre-confederation one-room school complete with vintage desks, books, and historical information.

The School is now located on a quiet side-street that once was the original main highway across Canada. The new Trans Canada Highway twinning project has bypassed creating a precious place to take a step back in remembrance of an almost forgotten period of Nova Scotia’s settlement to experience early rural education and lifestyles of the time.

The paved Old Orchard Rd. is a lovely place to take a peaceful stroll from the Museum to impressive views of the new highway bridge infrastructure over the bubbling Middle Brook, about 1.3 km return hike. Nearby Weavers Mountain leads to an extensive network of dirt roads that are perfect for mountain biking, adventurous orienteering, and finding beautiful landscapes and ocean vistas to discover in eastern Pictou County.

Showcasing local musical talents on Market Fridays, the Museum is open seasonally in July and August / Tues – Sun / noon – 5 pm  and is open in September during Friday Market hours until 7 pm (closed Mondays).
